Communique – 2009
We, a group of future leader of Asia, share a common vision for the betterment of the Asian community, leading to positive global impact. The following are some of the factors that we believe will contribute to the fulfillment of this vision.
Better Relations: The starting point for implementing our common vision is in improved relations between our member states. This means political stability, reduction in cross-border conflict, elimination of internal strife and enhanced mutual understanding.
Economic Prosperity: Recognizing that the root of most conflict is economic rather than political, we envision a continent able to provide adequate livelihood for its people, ensure not only the provision of food, clothing and shelter, but also the wherewithal in terms of basic education and health to enable its people to be economically self sufficient.
Transparency: Policies cannot be implemented properly if there is lack of transparency within the state sector. Improved governance at all levels of government is imperative if the people are to repose trust in their leadership and contribute to the implementation of the proposed reform agenda.
Tolerance: Religious and ethnic tolerance, respect for the rights of the minorities, and an end to gender discrimination will result in more harmonious relations within and between member states as well as greater focus on productive activities.
Environmental Protection: Protection of our natural resources will ensure that future generations do not suffer from our neglect of the environment. A number of our member states are already suffering from depleted water and energy resources and are unable to engage in adequate waste disposal or recycling efforts. A concerted effort is required to not only prevent a depletion of our natural resources, but also to invest in alternate sources of energy to cater to the rising demand.
Respect: A respect for tradition will ensure that our progress is not to the detriment of valuable local and indigenous knowledge and expertise. The betterment of our community should not be at the cost of endangering what we have held dear for past centuries and which has helped to define our respective identities.
We believe that the above “products” of our collective wisdom can be achieved through the following processes.
Aspiration: The process for the betterment will start with a common passion and aspiration and by inculcating the desire amongst the underprivileged to better their lives.
Sharing: We agree to share our knowledge, our systems, and our talent in reaching our collective goal.
Integration: None of this will be possible without a truly integrated Asia, with ease of travel across borders, with trust amongst our members and the need to enhance the economic conditions of all our people, and not just of some, through opportunities for mutually beneficial trade.
Accountability: Finally the actions taken and the processes employed have to have a robust accountability system built into it to ensure that it becomes the basis for trust and continued cooperation between our member states.
